Chief Information Technology Officer

Ben Shier serves as the University of Alaska’s (UA) Chief Information Technology Officer.  Shier is a lifelong Alaskan with more than 22 years in Alaska public CTO for Policy and Planning at the State Office of Information Technology, Media Technology Coordinator for the Governor’s Office; Assistant Director of Operations for the Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education, as well as several other executive leadership roles within the State of Alaska central IT organization.

In these roles Shier gained experience in systems management, organizational oversight, planning, policy development, and budgeting, and large-scale change management. Shier worked closely with (and briefly oversaw) the State’s Security Office and presently oversees UA’s Cybersecurity program.

Shier received his MPA and BS in Information Systems from the University of Alaska Southeast (UAS). Shier and his wife and children presently live in the Matsu valley.
